BGN Girl: Gina Torres
Gina Torres is a film actress who has appeared in many Sci-Fi and Fantasy genre TV shows. She grew up in the old neighborhood I used to live in the Washington Heights section of Manhattan. Her family later moved to the Bronx. She was bitten by the acting bug soon after high school and landed the role of Deena Jones in "Dreamgirls". In 2001, she won the ALMA Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Syndicated Drama Series for her role in "Cleopatra 2525". In 2004, she was nominated for the International Press Academy's Golden Satellite Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Drama, for her role as Jasmine in "Angel". Her film appearances include "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions".
It gets even nerdier...her other memorable characters soon followed like the Russo-Cuban assassin, Anna Espinosa on Alias; the shot gun toting mercenary Zoe Washburn in Joss Whedon’s "Firefly" and the feature film Serenity, and the soul eating Jasmin on Whedon’s "Angel". She even managed to parlay the tough girl persona into the world of animation, voicing the role of Vixen in "The Justice League" series, and most recently, "Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths" in the role of Superwoman opposite James Woods.
Gina is married to actor Laurence Fishburne whom she met on the set of the film "Matrix Reloaded". The two welcomed their daughter Delilah in 2007.
The video below is an interview with Gina discussing her role as Superwoman in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths...she's referred to as a "Genre Goddess". I don't think any of us would disagree with that.
