Blerds & Swagger: Will The Real Nerds Please Stand Up?

This post is full of questions.  So maybe you can answer them for me.

Swagger (n.) - A confident air of assurance of one's own personality, style, or appearance.  To have swagger is to be bold in who you are as a human being despite what others may think or say about you.

There are not many NWS (nerds with swagger) in the world, but I have come across a few in my research.  As it stands, the thought patterns of a "nerd" are as follows:

Socially inept
Highly intelligent
Fashionably-challenged
Lack of visual appeal
Unpopular

Who defines these thought patterns?  Is this a true archetype of what a nerd is?  What about men and women alike who define themselves as "nerds" but actually has tons of swagger?  Is it possible?

I'm posing a question to everyone out there, because I'm not sure of the answer to this myself---but I would like to know.  What makes one a nerd?  Their social inadequacies?  Their lack of fashion sense? Their obsession with non-social activities?

What about nerd-chic?  Celebrities who claim they are nerdy and exploit nerd stereotypes.  Are they really nerds, or do they think being nerdy is a hot trend that keeps their fame relevant?  As Huey Lewis once pointed out in his 80's hit...is it hip to be square?

Real Blerds?  Or Faux Geeks?  You pick the real ones from the fake ones.
