BIGBANG's sound started off very hip hop/hip pop and R&B oriented but their more recent music is more pop and dance.

Their big break came after the release of the song "Lies" which stayed at number one on the Korean music charts for a record breaking seven weeks. From 2007-2008 they received many awards "Best Male Group", "Song of the Year", "Artist of the Year", and the Grand Award at the Seoul Music Awards.
In 2009-2010 they expanded their audience into Japan and became the first foreign group to receive the "Best Newcomer" award from the Japan Cable Broadcasting Station and "Best New Artist" at MTV Japan. Taeyang, G-Dragon and Seungri have all branched out to make solo projects. TOP and G-Dragon collaborated on an album as GD & TOP.
They returned in 2011 after a two year hiatus with the release of Tonight EP and shortly after released Alive EP. Both received positive reviews from critics and fans.

How I found out about them:
Around the same time I was looking up Block B, I accidentally selected TOP's "Turn it Up." I liked it but I'd completely forgotten about it until earlier this week. I looked up TOP on Wikipedia and saw that he was apart of this group BIGBANG. After watching some of their more recent videos like "Fantastic Baby" I initially didn't like them (mainly because I'm not a big fan of electro-pop, but I'm learning to like it). And the video for "Bad Boy" was so unintentionally and adorably funny I couldn't stop myself from loving them.
I then started watching some of their earlier music videos like "A Fool's Only Tears" and they reminded me so much of past boy bands like B2K (remember them?) and Nsync, my love for them grew even more. I have to admit that I love their older songs and solo songs a little more, but I'm learning to love their newer ones.
