BGN Girl: Yvette Nicole Brown
We are delighted to include Yvette Nicole Brown in the growing list of Black Girl Nerds. As a star of one of my favorite shows Community, she plays Shirley the nurturing mother figure of the group. Shirley may not be the most adventurous or even open minded of the gang, but she is always understanding, loving, and waiting with a freshly baked treat to soothe the soul of whomever may need it. I’m including Yvette because Community itself is a very nerdy show.
The pop culture references are plentiful and the parodies and satires are extremely clever and funny. Just to give you a taste a recent episode featured the characters being played by puppets. But I saw the true extent of Yvette’s nerdy nature when I saw her on an episode of The Talking Dead. You could see she was a real fan of the show. She displayed insight and enthusiasm as a participant and she even brought detailed notes and bullet points to discuss the episode instead of just trying to make quips and lame jokes. She was such a good guest that Talking Dead brought her back for the season finale show. Bonus nerdy points for her voicing Cookie on the Hubs Pound Puppies. Additional Points for her early singing career as the East Coast Family 1-4-All-4-1.
