BGN Girl: Sammus

Sammus is an upstate New York based rap artist and producer with Congolese and Ivorian family roots (her great uncle is the African Nationalist leader Patrice Lumumba). Her beats are characterized by her use of uniquely chopped samples and video game-like synths. She has been called a “20-credit” rapper because of her smart lyrics, diverse subject matter, and versatile flow. As her Metroid-inspired name reflects, it is her hope that listeners and future fans will be pleasantly surprised by the contrast between the person society says she should be as an artist and who she actually is.

Initially moonlighting as a rapper while teaching elementary school math in 2009, Sammus has since built a small following within the underground hip hop scene and has become the face of Black female geeks within the nerdcore hip hop movement. Over the past two years, she has opened for well respected artists such as Raekwon, Open Mike Eagle, Random (Mega Ran), Louis Logic, Milo, and Listener and she will be performing at Nerdapalooza 2013. Her beat-tape entitled "Reset" received positive reviews in the feminist publication Bitch Magazine and both of her full length albums, "Prime" (2013) and "M'other Brain" (2012) became bestsellers on the music sharing website Bandcamp.com.

When she's not producing and rapping, Sammus is pursuing a PhD at Cornell University in the Department of Science & Technology Studies. In her free time, she enjoys watching nature documentaries on Netflix, playing old school video games, being in awe of amazing women, and taking cat naps.
