JRL Enterprises, Inc., creators of the U.S. Department of Education-recognized I CAN Learn® Program, today announced the appointment of Juliana Mims as their new Executive Director of Research. In her new role, Ms. Mims will offer continuing oversight to the company's dedication in adhering to scientifically based research in helping students, especially at-risk and minority students, master algebra -- the gateway course to every Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) degree.
"I'm excited about this opportunity to contribute to the challenging work of educating our nation's children," said Ms. Mims. "It is critical that educators use programs that are not merely 'research based.' What we want are programs that are 'research proven to be effective' through rigorous, peer-reviewed, scientifically based research studies. And that is exactly what I can help to identify here." Ms. Mims's initial focus will be to work with the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) to support their historically important Million Student Algebra Study. This study is designed to identify effective algebra programs, usable at a nationwide scale, that are available to educators to help close the achievement gap for African American students. Such programs can reduce the dropout rate, increase high school graduation rates, and better prepare African America students for STEM degrees and careers.
