My Favorite Scandal Women and Why I Love Them

The Scandal premiere was EVERYTHING I thought it would be. Fast moving, gut-wrenching salacious goodness, splashed with a peppery spice of political genius. No rock was left unturned in the season three opening; Olivia was cool as ever despite the indelible stain on her perfect white hat. Fitz and Mellie FINALLY declared open warfare. Cyrus personified his political monsterdom. And we won’t even talk about the enigmatic epicness that is Olivia’s father, Rowan Pope.

I basically couldn’t stop yelling at my TV screen Thursday night.

As Season 3 snowballs into a chaotic whirlwind, let’s take a step back and analyze some of the most provocative players. Here are my top three favorite Scandal women and why I love them oh so much.

Name: Abby Whelan
Title: Director of Gladiator Investigation and Supreme Authority on Wit Key
Moment: Stealing the Cytron card from David Rosen

Abby is, BY FAR, my favorite Gladiator. She brings intelligent comic relief to a seriously hardened Gladiator team. I adore her insouciant comedic delivery, all the while knowing that beneath the sarcasm is a highly competent woman able to connect all the dots. She’s the woman who looks out for other women. A victim of domestic violence, she is quick to support those in similar situations. She is the pinnacle of victim turned survivor.

And her red hair is to die for.

Name: Sally Langston
Title: Vice President and Bible Thumper Extraordinaire
Key Moment: The Draconian annihilation of Justice Verna Thornton (now deceased

Her medieval political ideology is sickening, but I can’t deny that she conveys her extreme-Right messages impressively. I cringe every time she equates godlessness with homosexuality, and her “sweet brown baby” line from the premiere was downright brutal. But her political savvy is undisputedly exceptional.

The Grant Administration screwed her over time and time again. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for them!

Name: Mellie Grant
Title: First Lady and Maniacal Power Player with a Delightful Feminine Touch
Key Moment: Everything. Everything Mellie is a key moment.

Mellie Grant, where to begin! With the relentless way she calls Olivia a whore? The slew of tricks she has up her tailored sleeves? The impassioned monologues that almost all women sympathize with? The list goes on and on. Mellie’s character development throughout the series is most recognizable. She began as the tamed, but ambitious FLOTUS; the devoted political wife that knows her social capital. And now, she’s a vindictive loose cannon more than willing to play even the deadliest of cards in her deck.

She’s the one that almost everyone has to watch out for. She’s in this for herself, no one else. And she’s willing to annihilate any and everyone who gets in her way.

The Scandal women are all smart and are slowly creating a mainstream narrative on women with astute political reasoning and stylish integrity who still embrace their femininity. On some level, they are the women that we should aspire to be.
