Watson and Holmes: My Comic Book Review

Every once in a while I like to sit back relax and read a really good comic book. It is not often that I come across material that forces me to turn page by page and finish issue by issue within a matter of hours. The Victorian classic Sherlock Holmes takes on a contemporary, metropolitan twist as two New Yorkers known as Dr. John Watson and Sherlock Holmes meet by chance at a Harlem hospital to find a missing girl named Trina. Trina’s boyfriend, Shon, who was nearly beaten to death is admitted to the ER and is treated by Dr. Watson. Shon is the link to a series of events that leads to a drug kingpin in Harlem responsible for many deaths. For every man that is the key to revealing their identity, one by one each become a victim of a gruesome murder and it is up to Watson and Holmes to track this criminal before they become the next victims.

This comic, which reads more like a graphic novel is edgy, brooding, and filled with suspense. The characters from scene to scene barely escape with their lives. The mysteries and clues to Private Investigator Holmes’ crafty detective work leaves the reader with intrigue and a burning curiosity to solve the puzzle by placing the missing pieces together. It is not often that you read three-dimensional characters of African-American descent in a clandestine cloak and dagger tale leaving the reader thirsty for more.

I read the first 4 issues in an hour.
