Letter from a Reader: Her Asking Price

Dear Fashion PULIS,

Allow me to share with you my personal sentiments as an avid fan of a once innocent and wholesome celebrity that I knew back then.

I have always been fascinated with this famous actress FA ever since I saw her first few movies as a child star. Her innocent beauty was a sight to behold even then. Through the years I saw her transformation slowly blossomed before the public, with her acting talent noticeably getting polished. Her management sure did a good job bringing her to where she is now.

She was a work in progress, slowly but surely climbing her way to the top. Through the years, the smart and ambitious girl in her learned the ropes, the most basic of trade secrets in the industry, cutting corners and the like. Her successful movies in the box office are sure fire signs that she really has what it takes to be in this industry. Hard work, luck and destiny seemed to conspire to bring her to stardom. Lucky girl.

But as a fan, I’m slowly getting to be disillusioned by FA’s recent antics. I thought her enviable fame and fortune would have humbled and tamed her. I know I’m not alone in this - of late, FA’s antics, her many indecent photos, outfits and scandals all scream public attention to herself. Why? Seems nothing can make her content because she’s always hungry for attention.

Now, more and more I am inclined to discourage a niece of mine who also happens to be FA’s big fan, not to be so into FA anymore as a role model . What is there to get inspired by anyway? FA is often acting delusional that she can always get away with anything because we allow her to. For me, she has lost that appeal for the young to emulate.

Because of my deep or probably blind admiration for her in the past, I chose to forget some very nasty things I knew about FA back then when she wasn’t yet that popular - as told to me by an eyewitness friend EF of mine who was privy to FA’s past.

EF worked for a top businessman who had several foreign clients and associates coming in and out of the country for regular meetings and business stuff. Needless to say that after the heavy stuff, came “fun and entertainment,” too. Being new in the job then, EF was shocked to be so casually summoned by her boss to contact a certain person to follow up on the invitation for FA to be with his business associates, most of whom were Chinese, for an entertainment that night.

Although completely stunned and dumbfounded, EF tried to restrain herself and went on with the process. That night at a specified venue, while the meeting was still on- going, somebody came into the room and announced that FA had arrived - ironically earlier than her call time. And not long after, right at the door, my friend EF saw FA in the flesh, scantily dressed and smiling at those old dirty old men who all looked like vultures waiting to devour her.

Her asking fee? P1M /pax/ night.

A few more of these encounters here and abroad, EF had enough and had since left the job.
