Singer Carolyn Malachi

On Saturday August 3rd, Carolyn Malachi will appear on the Black Girl Nerds podcast at 630 pm EST. Carolyn Malachi is a Grammy Nominated recording artist, songstress, social philanthropist, and a fellow Black Girl Nerd.

Her title as a BGN is the most impressive in my opinion.

If ever an artist belonged in the world’s ear buds, it’s Malachi. Over the past two years, she and producers James McKinney, Marcus Marshall and Silvio “Vito” Delis, Lorenzo Johnson, Joe Lindsay, and Apple Juice Kid quietly prepared the aspirational GOLD album mixed by engineer Scott Jacoby, and mastered by Emily Lazar. While studying business at Shepherd University in West Virginia, away from her hometown of Washington, DC, Carolyn Malachi, the great-‐granddaughter of jazz pianist John Malachi, began carving her own musical path.

She released her first album, Revenge of the Smart Chicks in 2008, then its sequel, Revenge of the Smart Chicks II: Ambitious Gods, in 2009. The two independent recordings lead Malachi to join the Recording Academy; the membership enhanced her creative process and expanded her industry knowledge. She spent the year studying Washington, DC Chapter members including jazz vocalist Maysa, R&B vocalist Raheem DeVaughn, and the late GoGo legend Chuck Brown. Malachi now sits on the chapter's Board and leads the Education Committee with 3x Grammy Award-‐winning engineer Pete Reineger.

Her 2010 EP release, Lions, Fires & Squares, heeded the wisdom of each newfound mentor. The project garnered national acclaim and earned a 2011 Grammy award nomination for Best Urban / Alternative Performance, placing the independent artist’s work in the same category as Janelle Monae and Cee Lo Green.

Grammy-nominated, singer-songwriter, Carolyn Malachi has announced the release date of her soulful, smooth, and upbeat new Album, "GOLD," for July 30, 2013. This young star has already been named by MTV as one of their "5 R&B Artists to Obsess Over". The previews of “GOLD,” her third full-length studio album, have already won over many of music’s top critics. “Of the world’s artistically courageous divas, next in line is bold soul sister Carolyn Malachi.

Ever since the buzz surrounding her Grammy—nominated single, “Orion,” she’s become a popular brand in soul music, both domestically and abroad.” - Apollo Theater

Carolyn’s first single off the album, “All Right” has been receiving numerous radio spins and producing much buzz in anticipation of the album’s release. The single, written as a love letter, lets her beloved know that everything is going to be alright as soon as she get’s home. This soulful song includes 16 bars of rap in the middle, as Carolyn shows off her versatility and creative chops. When asked whether she prefers rapping to singing or spoken word poetry, Malachi replies, "When a song plays, the music and the vocal performance need to dance - together. I like to let the music lead. Music comes first, because music is freedom."

She says, "The GOLD album is an invitation to participate in that freedom." Carolyn continues to wow crowds and has already performed at some of the nation’s most prestigious venues, including New York’s legendary Apollo Theatre, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Washington DC’s Verizon Center, John F. Kennedy Center of the Performing Arts, Blues Alley, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, just to name a few.

Her music sales have already funded over 10,000 class hours for students in Tanzania and East Africa with her music video for her song "Free Your Mind.” Over the past two years, Malachi has been putting the soulful album together with award winning producers, James McKinney, Marcus Marshall, Silvo “Vito” Delis, Lorenzo Johnson, Joe Lindsay, and Apple Juice Kid.

It is no surprise that Carolyn enlists the eclectic and dynamic talents of so many others for the album, as a true believer in diversity and expression, Malachi proclaims, "I am always amazed by the power of art to summon the people and spark dialogue... Each of our paths is unique. Music is the intersection where we pause for collective conversation."

The album GOLD touches on some of the highs and lows of Carolyn’s path, which presents a relatable and relevant dynamic to all of its listeners. Malachi's path has not been an easy one, but through her remarkable talent and her unwavering faith, she has been received numerous distinguished accomplishments; including songwriting for Chuck Brown's posthumous album, recording with Japan's cherished Bop Alloy, acting in New York's Off Broadway theater festivals, and placing her music in film scores including the German boxoffice hit, ‘My Last Day Without You.'

Most recently, BET presented her at its 2012 Leading Women Defined Summit. In 2013, she became a PGCSIF Innovation Fellow concentrating on the economic impact of the Arts & Humanities in Prince George’s County, MD.
