Fan Film Sets Out To Bring New Life To Storm of the X-Men

RAIN: a fan film about Storm is the heartfelt passion play of filmmaker and performer Maya Glick.

Dissatisfied with the complete lack of empowered women of color in Hollywood's superhero pantheon, Maya decided to take matters into her own hands and fill in that blank herself with a bold new take on her favorite X-Men character: Ororo Munroe, best known as Storm.

As most long running comic book heroes have, Storm has had many incarnations and different styles over the decades. The version of Storm closest to this author's heart and the one she needed to see brought to life is the "punk" version of Storm, originally appearing in the mid-80's for a brief period. During this time Storm had temporarily lost her powers, but remained a leader and a fierce fighter though will, wits, and fists.

The idea of this somewhat underground version of such a complex character is something that fascinated Maya enough as a writer that she found herself re-imagining that character in different scenarios, and the script was born.

When word got out that a film was in the works featuring "streetpunk" Storm, it sent shockwaves of interest and excitement through the world of social media. Within less than 2 months the fan page for the film accumulated almost 2000 'likes', and without having even begun production the filmmaker herself has been the subject of at least 5 interviews about the project, with featured stories in sci-fi webzines such as Legendarium, What's Fit To Print, BoomTube Comics, and The Learned Fangirl to name a few. Most recently she was interviewed on camera as a featured filmmaker for an upcoming documentary about the impact that fan creations can have on the larger industry. Other subjects of the film include Robert Rodriguez, Harry Knowles, and Stan Lee himself. The documentary is being produced by the Canadian company Ruby Tree Films, due out next year.

Maya is (previously) most well known as a musician and performer. The band she fronted, Mother Goddess, rocked New York City from 1996 - 2005 and are featured in the 2002 music documentary Afropunk.

After the tragic loss of her infant son in 2011, she took up martial arts as a form of therapy and through her training she found empowerment and salvation from grief and depression. Her own journey from tragedy and powerlessness to triumph and empowerment is the inspiration for the story she wants to tell through this film, by way of her favorite Superhero.
