Novella Series Creates a New Universe for African American Women by Merging Romance with Science-Fiction

Theory 1,” the first book in a new novella series for African American women titled “A Parallel Love,” will be released on November 25, 2013 on aparallellove.com.

In a world where media is bombarded by unrealistic reality shows that spill over to social media, it’s often difficult to find authentic and truly relatable characters. This is even more the case for African-American women. Often showcased as boisterous divas that exude villain-worthy personalities, there are few fictional characters that everyday women desire to embrace. Zoë Modal, the main character of “A Parallel Love,” steps out and breaks the mold by encompassing the many layers of African-American women that are often neglected such as: video games, art, comic books, fashion and science fiction, subjects that many would consider interest of nerds. At the surface, she is just a normal woman living in Atlanta. With the help of a very special force in her life, she finds that there is nothing normal about her.

The series, created and written by Valeasia Walker, is made up of individual novellas, called Theories. Each theory represents a parallel universe where the characters are the same but the circumstances are very different. While each theory stands alone as romance novellas, as a series it explores themes of science fiction and superheroes challenging its readers to embrace everything that makes them different.

Readers can connect and engage with Zoë and each other through the following social channels: Pinterest[KT1] , Facebook and Twitter as well as a soundtrack for the first release on Spotify[KT2] . The “Atlanta Tribune” 2013 Best Photographer, John Stephens of JAS Photo, also captured strong images for African American women to embrace and share across all social platforms in this visually stimulated virtual environment.

This is the first published novella series for Walker, an Augusta, Georgia native and graduate of Florida A & M University. An Atlanta resident, Walker is a graphic designer and owner of a small design business.
