There are all sorts of adhesives for crafters that sometimes it can get quite overwhelming trying to figure out what to use for which project. Glue is glue right? Well, not really! Keep reading to find out what sticks to what and my pick for the best glue for most projects.
CRAFT GLUE
Craft glue would include white glue and glue sticks. This type of glue is good for porous and semi-porous surfaces such as paper, plastic, styrofoam and fabric. This type of glue is good for light projects. Kid-friendly!
WOOD GLUE
Wood glue is a craft glue similar to white glue but specifically created to adhere to wood. It penetrates the wood in order to create a strong bond. This type of glue is good for wood projects.
GLUE GUN
Hot glue is a craft glue that comes in a solid form. It is heated in a glue gun and can range from high to low temperature glue settings. Hot glue is good for lightweight materials such as fabric and temporary glue applications.
SUPER GLUE
Super glue creates an instant bond between two non-porous materials. This type of glue is good for metal, plastic and rubber. This glue is toxic and should be used with care, keep away from children.
RUBBER CEMENT
Rubber cement is a adhesive made from latex polymers mixed with acetone or other solvents. It is a liquid used to mainly adhere paper that is easily wrinkled. Rubber cement used to be the scrapbookers go to glue but now not so much with acid free options.
FABRIC GLUE
Fabric glue is similar to white glue but provides flexibility and wash resistance. Because fabric glue is like white glue it can also be used on paper. You can find fabric glue in glue, spray, and webbing form.
SPRAY ADHESIVE
Spray adhesive is dispersed from a aerosol can and sprays droplets of glue. This type of glue is best for lightweight projects and materials such as paper and fabric.
MOD PODGE
Mod podge is a glue made for colaging and decoupaging. It is great for bonding and sealing. It is very similar to white glue but can be used specifically as a protective sealer. This product comes in various finishes such as matte, gloss, and satin.
CRAFT EPOXY
Epoxies are extremely durable and waterproof. They work great for surfaces such as metal, ceramics and plastics. For crafters who need something glued this is the product I would recommend simply because it can hold together so many things (wood, leather, rubber, plastic, glass, metal, even concrete!). This glue is toxic, keep away from children.
What is your favorite type of craft adhesive when crafting?
I'm a woodworking lover so my favorite is probably wood glue but overall I love E6000 (craft epoxy) for loads of uses. It really does work great for all sorts of projects.
