BGN Girl: Courtney Deanna

My name is Courtney. I was born and raised in Niagara Falls, New York. I always knew I was a little different even as child. There weren’t many black girls like me but even then I knew somewhere they just had to exist! I grew up writing my own stories, taking dance classes, painting (especially with water colors), owning every single Baby-Sitters Club book that ever existed. I loved anything creative! I have always had an obsession with comic book superheroes, especially Batman. I rocked glasses even when it was not hip or fashionable. And yes I loved playing with my brother’s action figures.

Steve Urkel to me was always cool. Till this day I embrace my nerdiness. I have a fascination with Wolverine, I rock to Phil Collins, Ella Fitzgerald and I have the Wiz soundtrack memorized. I love musicals and have performed in a couple of productions in my hometown. I love liturgical dance and makeup artistry. I sometimes feel like the black Molly Ringwald…I’m totally stuck in the 80’s. Plus I own every season of the Facts of Life. Vintage anything rocks my world. I adore Lena Horne and Audrey Hepburn. I love dessert, especially cake! A great weekend for me is hanging out a Barnes and Noble sipping on a hot chocolate, seeing a great flick or going to my favorite restaurants.

I graduated from Buffalo State College where I obtained a B.A degree in Communication Studies and a minor in dance. I currently work as an Administrative Data Analyst. My blog The Facets of an Odd Black girl is where I share my thoughts, love for beauty, art, music, movies and my faith in God. There are so many dimensions to us black girls, which makes us such diverse group of people. By using the term Odd in a positive manner, I encourage girls to be unique and not to be afraid of being their self. You are fearfully and wonderfully made! Be yourself! Be unique! Be odd!
